Oakland ACHA DI Hockey general manager Corey Hagood is pleased to announce that defenseman Joseph Borro is the first commit for the 2025-26 season. Borro comes to Oakland from the Lakes Area Hockey Team (MHSAA)
“I am very happy to have the opportunity to attend Oakland University.” Borro stated. “Playing college hockey has always been an aspiration for me and I’m proud to play for the Oakland Grizzlies.”
“We are very excited to have Joe on the team and committed for 25-26” Head coach Nick Mammel stated. “He will be the first commit to come from our prospect skate we had last winter for 25-26 and the 2nd overall.
“Joe brings size and depth to our D core and his high IQ should help make the adjustment quickly. He’s another local kid that we got to stay home and for us that is a huge victory within its self. We must continue to add local talent in hopes of bringing home a national championship.”
Borro has had positive experiences during the recruiting process with the Oakland coaching staff, which made it easy to commit. “The coaching staff have been extremely supportive and friendly, always making it easy going through the recruiting process. I really enjoy talking with the coach and finding out about the exciting experiences to come.”
“I chose to play hockey for Oakland because from what I have seen the program seems very player oriented ,and I hope that playing here can make me a better player.” Borro said. “Oakland is also very close to home and I can hope to have support from my family and friends as I continue my hockey career at Oakland University.”
As a hard working defenseman Borro will add depth, size, and additional hockey IQ to the blueline next season. “I am a dedicated hard working hockey player and you can expect to see that on the ice every time. I am a great teammate and you’ll always see me supporting my team. I make smart plays as a defensemen and do not crumble under pressure, I make sure that everything I contribute to the team is 100% effort and makes the team better. I would say that I am a defensive-minded player with offensive capabilities.”
Borro plans to study Engineering at Oakland.
