Rochester Hills, MI- Oakland Hockey General Manager Corey Hagood has announced that defenseman Matthew Moretuzzo has committed to Oakland.

Moretuzzo comes to Oakland from Saginaw Heritage, where he scored seven goals and 21 assists. “I committed to Oakland for a few main reasons. First, I love the area of Rochester and have grown up playing hockey in the surrounding area (Troy).” Moretuzzo stated.

While at Oakland Moretuzzo will be studying Business Administration.

“I also wanted to continue playing hockey at a high level, but also attend a large university. Oakland has a very good business school with many connections for internships in the surrounding community, along with a reputable Honors College.” Moretuzzo said.

He is motivated to get the season going and has a team first mentality.

“In hockey, I am very dedicated and self-motivated to better myself; whether it be on or off the ice.” Moretuzzo added. “I always try to put the team first and do what is best for the person next to me.”

On the ice he has a strong hockey sense and makes himself a player other teams hate to play against, but love to be teammates with. He also takes responsibility on the defensive end as a serious part of his game, which makes him the perfect fit for head coach Nick Field and assistant coach Aaron Hundt.

“On the ice, I make very smart decisions with the puck and have strong hockey sense while making plays. I embrace the physical aspect of hockey and try to be the person that others do not want to play against. Lastly, I am very responsible in the defensive end before jumping up into the offensive play.”

For Moretuzzo, Oakland University and Oakland ACHA DI Hockey became the perfect fit for what he was looking for. “Being able to play a high level of hockey, attend a large university, all while obtaining a good education in the field of my choice makes Oakland a perfect fit for me.”

Oakland held its early signing day this weekend at the ONYX Ice Arena. The Golden Grizzlies have seven new commits we will be announcing. Coach Field and his staff are also still on the recruiting trail, with a few more spots open on next season’s roster.
